Unpaved roads are critical for industries such as mining, plantations, and construction. But they also generate high levels of dust pollution, which can reduce safety, increase maintenance costs, and damage equipment.

Applying a dust control treatment is one of the best solutions, but preparation is key. A properly prepared road will make dust suppression more effective and longer lasting.

Here are the main steps to follow before applying treatment:

  1. Remove Loose Stones

Loose stones on unpaved roads are problematic. Every time a vehicle drives over them, they shift, creating instability and accelerating erosion.

Why it matters:

  • Creates uneven driving conditions
  • Increases wear on vehicle tires
  • Weakens the dust suppression layer applied later

Solution:
Use a grader or shovel to remove loose stones. Alternatively, spray the road lightly with water and run a compactor over it. This presses stones back into the road base, creating a smoother, more stable surface.

  1. Address Excess Fine Material

Excess fine dust or “powder” deeper than 2–3 cm significantly reduces the effectiveness of dust control treatments.

Why it matters:

  • Creates loose surfaces that erode quickly
  • Weakens adhesion of dust suppression polymers
  • Shortens the treatment’s lifespan

Solution:
Compact the road before applying dust control. In cases where fines are too loose, carefully remove the top layer. This ensures the treatment bonds properly with the road surface.

  1. Repair Potholes and Ruts

Potholes, ruts, and grooves are the weak points of unpaved roads. Vehicles hitting these defects cause further cracking and erosion, which damages the dust suppression coating applied on top.

Why it matters:

  • Traps water, leading to surface washouts
  • Weakens structural integrity of the road
  • Causes uneven distribution of traffic pressure

Solution:
Before applying dust control products, level potholes and ruts. Proper grading ensures a smooth surface, protecting both the road and the treatment layer.

  1. Ensure Proper Drainage

Drainage is critical for the performance of dust suppression treatments, especially in tropical regions like Southeast Asia, where heavy rains are frequent.

Why it matters:

  • Standing water weakens the road base
  • Water flow across the road washes away treatment products
  • Accelerates erosion and structural damage

Solution:
Build side drainage canals or culverts to control water flow. Prevent uncontrolled runoff from crossing the road surface. This ensures the road remains intact during the rainy season and that treatments remain effective.

Why This Matters

Well-prepared roads means:

  • Longer-lasting dust suppression
  • Safer and more stable driving conditions
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better compliance with environmental standards
